A FEW TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING THE NEW ONE

Practice your closeup shots on a doll before you graduate to a baby sleeping next to a window. Focus on the eyes. Get creative on your focusing later.

7 months to a year is prime time

The perfect baby is the one that can sit up and can’t crawl away. When a baby can crawl away from your camera things get exponentially more difficult. When they can walk away all bets are off.  My guess is the average age of a baby who appears on the cover of a national baby magazine is ten months.

Most babies are at their photographic best in the morning after they’ve eaten and before they decide to nap.

If you hire someone to come to your house to photograph your baby and you get pictures you love you were all lucky—you, your baby, and the photographer. The main reason to hire someone to photograph your baby is that they are a better photographer than you are; there are many people who are better photographers than both of us and that’s a good reason. But you have something they—or I— will never have; complete access to your life. Access trumps all.  When the good stuff happens your lack of professional technique will pale next to real, meaningful moments.
