Fan Photo of the Day: Kara Johnson, again

If you have a propensity towards sea sickness never put a telephoto lens to your face while your standing on a sailboat. Trust me, I know. Kara clearly does not have this problem. The speed, the spray, the salt and the sea are all here as this flying sailor is engulfed in the joy of riding on the wind. Kara said she loves sailing and it shows. Many of the greatest photographs are driven by the photographer’s love for her subject.

  • This is an incredible photo. It isn’t easy taking pictures from the back of a boat when it is going up and down, reacting to waves, wind and people moving around. Usually, I get the top or the bottom of my subject. So, I appreciate what is involved in doing this! It is just beautiful!

  • I was totally awestruck when I saw this photo! It is awesome!!

  • Thanks, Nick and everyone. I do love being out on the water, either sailing or taking pictures of sailing. This boat is an International 14 and I have been taking pictures of that fleet inToronto for a couple of summers, now. They are very photogenic boats since they go fast and sometimes jump the waves. On this particular day, it was very windy! Athough a bit more challenging, both for the sailors and the photographer, it sets the stage for more interesting photos and these two guys were having a blast! The races were postponed due to wind and wave conditions, but these two took advantage of the wild conditions and so did I by following them around! They were out so long, that they were too tired to race when the races were finally started! :)
