ANN YOW-DYSON / Great Women Photographers

PART TWO in a recurring series of interviews with some of my good friends. I attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism with Ann Yow-Dyson. She eventually ended up as a staff photographer at the Seattle Times for many years and then a professor of photography at the University of Washington. She now lives in Bellingham, Washington. Here’s Ann’s voice: It’s a great exercise for me to reflect on how I do what I do. It becomes so intuitive after a matter of years that you don’t really think about the process behind it. I guess if….

REBECCA BARGER / Great Women Photographers

Last summer I got together for a weekend with several of my Men–Men–Men photographer friends and ended up sharing their advice for amateur photographers with you. I received some comments asking if I knew any women photographers. Well, yes, I know several incredible photographers that fit that description. So over the next couple weeks I’m going to share some interviews that I did recently with female photographers and dear friends that I’ve worked with over the years. Today I would like to share the thoughts of Rebecca Barger. Rebecca was hired at the Inquirer in 1985 and served as a….

Photo Management / The Old Photos / continued

A couple of weeks ago we began a conversation about how to organize photographs. Step one was relatively easy; commit to a systematic method of naming and filing pictures you will take in the future. Step two, however, is pretty darn snarly. Step two is what to do with all of the existing photographs in our lives. They can reside in other people’s photo albums, cell phones, and on their walls framed as one-of-a-kind family heirlooms. It’s a problem and can be overwhelming…..

Irving Penn / A Lesson from a Master

Irving Penn was a quiet man who kept a low profile as a staff photographer for a very public magazine and changed the way a generation of photographers look at and photograph the human face. His bold and meticulous lighting and compositions opened doors and eyes to an elegant world never seen before. Photographers have been trying to imitate him for decades and he’s never been out done. In his New York studio he gathered pieces of canvas and lovingly painted plywood to bath in the beautiful light that has become the signature of Vogue magazine’s 1950s and 60s portraits….

Predicting Where the Sun will Rise or Set

Knowing where the sun will be on the horizon at sunrise or sunset can be a handy piece of information for a photographer. If you have a particular building or tree you’d like to photograph and you’d like to incorporate the sun into the picture it’s nice to be able to predict the alignment of the two without having to come back at sunset to find out that they, well, don’t align. It’s true, that there’s an iPhone app that will do this for you. But if you can figure out where North is you can pretty much do this….
