8 WEEKLY MODULES:
INTRODUCTION TO GOING MANUAL
F-stops, shutter speed and ISO are the three key camera settings known as the exposure triangle. It's the gateway to the creative photography experience you’ve been craving but requires understanding the confusing relationship between time, quantity, and sensitivity—and the almost mystical relationship between the exposure settings and your light meter. But don't worry, nobody leaves the room until everybody understands F-stops, shutter speed and ISO!
HOW A LIGHT METER THINKS (OR DOESN'T)
Friend, enemy, loyal companion, manual metering takes you on the important journey to mood and exposure. Yes, it’s a simple tool, but also a living rascal. Don't worry, we'll tame it. You'll learn overall metering, spot metering, highlights, shadows, the all-important middle grey tone. You'll master all the different light meter modes and when to use them for the effect you desire.
HOW DOES THE LENGTH OF YOUR LENS AFFECT DEPTH OF FIELD
It’s entirely possible you bought that long telephoto lens to put backgrounds out of focus and not bring things closer. Learning when to use a long lens to put backgrounds out of focus is one of the main ways you will begin to think like a professional.
OPENING THE DOOR TO DEPTH OF FIELD
For many professional photographers, controlling the out of focus background is the money shot. That’s called depth of field and you'll learn to control it like the pros. There are so many ways to control how much the background goes out of focus—relative distance between subject/camera/background, lens length, aperture, and combinations of all the above. We'll cover them all.
FOCAL LENGTH AND THE SHAKES
What lens you choose to use has a lot to do with how still you can hold your camera. In this section we talk about several different techniques to help you keep your camera still and produce the sharp pictures you really want. You'll learn to understand focal length to avoid photos that are a blurry mess and make them tack sharp instead.
MASTERING COLOR BALANCE
What color is the sun? Wrong. It’s blue. That’s just one example of the complicated matrix of color. We will learn several different ways that your camera sees color and how you control those ways. There’s automatic color balance, custom color balance, and manual color balance. We'll discuss them all and you'll learn to control color balance when you are shooting in raw.
SHOOTING RAW
Shooting raw means you are taking advantage of everything that expensive camera has to give you. It’s more than recommended, it’s mandatory. You will learn just exactly what raw files are and how you deal with them in your editing program regardless of the program that you use. Yes, it takes a little more energy but it’s worth it.
MAKING SENSE OF HISTOGRAMS
Sure, they look like gibberish but they are actually a very straightforward way of assessing your exposure and contrast. Super fun! I'll teach you to evaluate the brightness, darkness, and contrast of your photographs just by looking at the histogram. We'll discuss clipping (over or under exposing your picture can actually do damage). All of this can be seen in the histogram.

If you are just starting out…no worries, everything that he says will make sense…keep going! I love my camera and my photos are a reflection of what I have learned.

“Throughout the years I have taken so many stabs at trying to learn manual photography that it boggles my mind. I can’t count that high. I finally decided that I was just not smart enough to learn this stuff. I decided I had to take your course because your books are the only ones that have ever changed my photography and I’m so glad I did. I already feel like a rocket scientist!”

“This course was exactly what I needed! I love taking photos and capturing memories. But I was getting very discouraged that I was not able to transfer what my eyes were seeing, to picture form. I didn't know how to 'up my game.' This course was just what I needed. 8 weeks of learning, practicing and encouraging from both Nick and the fabulous ladies in the course with me. The personalized feedback was AWESOME. It really helped me learn from what I was doing and then correct or adjust it. The course gave me the knowledge I needed in simple steps without dumping it all on me in one day and expecting me to remember. Practicing every day and posting pictures to be critiqued was a valuable part of learning, as well as learning from the others in my class with their successes and victories! I got more out of the course than I ever expected. Not only do I know how to handle my camera in Manual, but I have newfound friendships from those in my class, and we continue to encourage one another. This course has lit a fire under me that has been smouldering for years and it's not going out this time! Thank you so much, Nick, for this course! I am just not able to find the perfect words to express my sincere thanks.”

Going Manual is a series of online videos and resources to help anyone interested in turning off the Auto setting on their DSLR camera.
Each Monday a new topic is posted in the form of a video with written components, a discussion board, assignments and a gallery to upload your assignment photos. Your classmates and Nick will post comments and provide valuable feedback and review of your assignment photos. You’ll also receive a quiz to test your grasp of the topics with a video review, including the answers, from Nick.
Don’t worry about “making class”; each video and all of the resources are designed to be self-paced within the framework of the 8 week syllabus. Ideally, most participants will want to work on the material during the week it’s posted, as that will provide the most beneficial interaction with Nick and classmates. However, if your schedule doesn’t allow that, you can always catch up at your own pace and you will have full access to the videos and resources for three years.
And Nick loves to get on the phone with anyone who might feel like they’re floundering during the course. He has actually saved a few photographic lives by talking students in from the edge of the photographic cliff. Nobody leaves Nick's class until everbody understands F-stops, shutter speed and ISO!
Our GOING MANUAL course has always gotten rave reviews but here's the best part about our new sessions...we’ll be adding even more live interaction components to the course than when you last took it, to further enhance the experience of working with Nick—and classmates—as personally as possible on your photography.
He’s adding two live Zoom sessions weekly—a live interactive class, and on Friday's a live Office Hours via Zoom for personalized Q&A and informal chats!
Plus we'll be using Facebook's Learning Group format with added benefits like "Guides" to organize posts according to the weekly modules, the ability to check off what you've seen or done so you can keep track and won't miss a thing in the FB Group, and Hashtag Topics to organize and help you find topic or lesson specific photos, questions answers and discussions.
These updates and more are guaranteed to make this the most interactive and profound learning experience out there.
Want This Extra Interactive Experience With Me?
I hope so—we start JANUARY 15, 2024 and mastering manual mode will be a great way to kick off your photography New Year's resolutions!
“You can take better photos and I can help you do it. But cameras are complicated. So it has to be fun and that's where I come in...
I've had all kinds of experiences as a photographer but the most satisfying thing I've done with my camera is help people like you take pictures.
I know that photography courses on the internet are a dime a dozen, but my students tell me I make it clear and fun. I do my best to make it fun.”
