Santa Fe Photography Workshop:

With optional add-on day:
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

It’s about you, your camera, and the stories of your life.
Nick Kelsh's Photography Workshops
offer an amazing opportunity to become lifelong friends with your camera ... and your fellow photographers! Each workshop has a carefully chosen location with a program designed specific to that area and the season to create an experience in which you'll expand both your photographic and cultural horizons... not to mention your friendships! In fact, because each place, season and group creates such a unique experience, a quarter of our participants have become repeat attendees! Don't just take our word for it... see what previous workshop participants have to say:
What I like most about Nick’s workshops – They are comfortable learning environments. Nick sets the tone so that everyone, no matter their expertise, learns how to improve their skills with only constructive critiques. I was so nervous when I arrived since I was not a professional photographer and felt I was probably in over my head. I was so wrong. The moment I first met Nick and some of the other attendees, I immediately felt at ease and knew I was where I should be. Nick proved to be very patient, explained things where I could understand them, and was always available to answer questions. The other attendees, well, they were awesome. From the professionals to those like me, everyone was willing to share their knowledge and their friendship. The workshops are extremely well organized so that we make the most of our time. Spouses feel included and actually enjoy the experience. Finally, the workshops are like taking a vacation but no one minds that you stop and take lots and lots of photographs!!

Santa Fe Workshop, 2021:
One of the best things about a Nick Kelsh workshop is getting personal attention and instruction from Nick. This could not get any better… Part of the fun of being on a Nick Kelsh workshop is having Nick scout out good places to photograph in great light. Here in Santa Fe, we spent time making photos with the colorful background of columns near the central plaza. Very fun, and very instructive. And fyi, even Nick didn’t try to turn these colorful photos into Black & White!… Another fun part of a workshop like this is that you get to see the photos that others took in the same place you were in. It is always a learning experience to see others’ different perspectives and points of view… This morning at the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival was worth our entire trip to New Mexico. There were over 600 balloons launched this morning. We walked all around while the balloons were inflating and launching. I have lots of photos to process. I started with my iPhone while it was still dark, then used my normal 24-70mm lens for a long while, then switched to 70-200mm telephoto for close in shots, and finally finished up us the super wide 12-24mm lens I rented for this trip. I think I will have some amazing photos. What an experience! What a magical event The Balloon Fiesta is, and a great final conclusion to a wonderful trip with Nick Kelsh and How to Photograph Your Life fans. We will never forget this time!… We are now all back home from our New Mexico photo workshop. It was a magnificent time, and I am sure we all learned a lot. After we have time to edit our photos, we will have a time where Nick shares and comments on our images in a zoom meeting. I am looking forward to that, since learning from others’ visions is a great way for me to break out of my habits… My camera is about five years old now, and I estimate that the shutter has clicked about 100,000 times. I could upgrade to a newer model, but I figure the better use for my money is saving up for more experiences like this one. Maybe I will see you on a future workshop!
Philadelphia Workshop, 2018:
What an amazing time we had. Nick is so generous to spend time with each of us as needed, and it is so fantastic to get help from him in person. Anne shared a meal with us each day, and it was especially fun to see Alexander and Teddy one night too. [Terryl Hicks does an amazing job to plan and organize these workshops. What a treat to get to meet her, too.] If you have not been to one of these workshops, I strongly encourage you to budget so you can save up – both the cost and the time – to have an experience like this. What a privilege for me to get to spend a week with Nick!
Although I have many interests and have never aspired to being a professional photographer, I’ve found joy in taking pictures wherever I go. My weekend in the Catskills with Nick and my other new friends was a game-changer! Not only did I learn crucial camera and editing skills (locked in by an entire glorious weekend of practice), but I started daring to try new things and I began to view the visual world around me with a greater sense of wonder. There is a marked difference in my photos from the fall of 2016 on. I wish I could attend more of these workshops for the fun of it and for the dedicated time to photography, but anyone who is considering going should know that one may be all you need to flip a switch and help you improve tremendously!

An exclusive invitation to a spectacular part of the world
“It is all very beautiful and magical here—a quality which cannot be described. You have to live it and breathe it … the skies and land are so enormous, and the detail so precise and exquisite that wherever you are you are isolated in a glowing world between the macro and the micro, where everything is sidewise under you and over you, and the clocks stopped long ago.” – Ansel Adams
The rugged beauty of Santa Fe blends Native American, Spanish and Wild West influences with textures and colors shining in legendary beautiful light to create a photographer’s dream destination. It is a magical and colorful landscape that will delight and enchant any photographer’s eye – just as it has for many of photography’s greatest.
This is one of the classic destinations in the history of photography; it’s practically a pilgrimage. Santa Fe has been a mecca for numerous photographers, including the iconic Ansel Adams … and now it’s your turn to capture the beauty of the Southwest.
With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, beautiful sunsets and amazing vistas, Santa Fe is a wonderful place for a photographic adventure. Adobe buildings against brilliant blue skies are just the beginning of life in “The City Different.” Multi-cultural influences are visible in everything from art to architecture, from jewelry to food, all designed to thrill the senses. Not only has this area inspired photographers, it has moved artists and painters such as Georgia O’Keefe, a pioneer of American modernism known for her iconic Southwestern illustrations of flowers, cityscapes, animal skulls and landscapes.
“Both the grand and the intimate aspects of nature can be revealed in the expressive photograph. Both can stir enduring affirmations and discoveries, and can surely help the spectator in his search for identification with the vast world of natural beauty and wonder surrounding him.” – Ansel Adams
In other words, Santa Fe and its surrounding areas are a photographer’s paradise!
You can also extend your experience and learning opportunities with our Optional Add-On Day at the Alburquerque International Balloon Festival! As hundreds of hot air balloons ascend from Balloon Fiesta Park, the skies are filled with a rainbow of colors and your viewfinder with an unending source of opportunities to capture this breathtaking beauty. It is one of the world’s most photographed events and for good reason!
We’re excited to invite you to join us for a truly special experience … a Southwestern getaway combined with an intimate, intensive, personalized, hands-on photography workshop. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from my lifetime of shooting photographs while visiting one of our country’s most spectacular landscapes.
You’ll be inspired and challenged. You’ll photograph, eat, play, relax, explore, grow, bond and, I predict, above all else, be absolutely thrilled with how it will change your photography forever.
You’ll gain the skills and confidence to take control of your camera. You’ll enjoy a memorable getaway and return home with those memories beautifully captured in the kind of photographs you’ve always dreamed of shooting. The kind that you’ll now be comfortable shooting consistently – photographs that will enrich your life and the lives of those you love.
Why spend this time with me?
For me personally, these workshops could possibly be the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my career. I would rank my photography workshops among the great photographic experiences of my life. They are thrilling and attendees have enjoyed them so much that many have attended multiple workshops.
I've hosted hundreds of seminars, retreats, public speaking events, webinars and online classes. I've written and/or photographed nine books, and I have come to the conclusion thw working with a small group over a period of several days may very well be the perfect teaching and learning format.
There's enough time for me to connect with every student personally and still give you time to be alone with your camera and exercise your mind's eye - in other words, shoot great pictures. That's what it's all about.
Yes, we're going to make sure you're secure in knowing how to use your camera in manual mode but I want more than that for you. I want you to think like a photographer. I want you to think in terms of photographic communication. I want you to tap into your inner storyteller. I want you to create images - during the workshop and beyond - that will enrich your life and the lives of the people you love.
I want to help you get there. And I want you to have good old-fashioned fun doing it.
Oh, and one more thing... I guarantee you'll leave a better photographer.

An overnight photography trip to the world-famous
ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA
(October 14, 2023)
When you register for our Santa Fe Workshop you’ll have the chance to add our optional visit to the Albuquerqure International Balloon Fiesta—the world’s largest hot air ballooning event! With hundreds of balloons rising from the fiesta grounds, this event is said to be one of the most photographed events in the country. You’ll feast your eyes on the beauty and color of the balloons, and capture the experience through the lens of your camera while standing on the field as the balloons lift off around you … a combination sure to take your photography up, up and away!
Our visit will include both the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday, to give us the best chance to see – and photograph – the inflations, ascensions and glows of the balloons. Please note that we cannot guarantee that balloons will inflate and/or fly during the times we are at the Balloon Fiesta, as inflations and launches are determined by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and are subject to wind and weather conditions and other factors beyond our control. While our photography day with Nick will end Saturday evening, you may choose to extend your stay and return to the Balloon Fiesta for additional sessions on subsequent days – however, those accommodations and excursions will be at your own expense, as they are not included as part of the workshop’s Add-On Day.
Add the Balloon Fiesta Day to take your workshop experience even higher!

PRE- WORKSHOP PREPARATION
Before the workshop begins you'll be asked to upload a set of ten photographs to give us a sense of who you are and where you are in your photographic journey. It could be a picture of your family and then your photographic greatest hits and/or mistakes! I'll review these with you in a private consultation call before the workshop and then we'll share them with the group in our opening night presentation, as we get to know each other and all share our photographic achievements, challenges, and goals.
MASTERING MANUAL MODE
We welcome a diversity of experience and skill levels among attendees. I know that we'll have students attending this weekend who could probably teach significant portions of it. On the other hand, we'll have people with expensive cameras who lack the understanding of how to take full advantage of all the bells and whistles.
To level the playing field, I want to make sure that all attendees are relatively comfortable with their camera settings before we get to the first day of shooting. If anyone who’s attending wants to get on the phone with me before the workshop, I will be happy to walk you through your settings.
You'll be asked to watch (or review) my 60-minute "F-stops, Shutter Speeds, and ISO Made Easy" training in advance of the workshop.
Also, I will be available on location during the day on the first day for anyone who wants to be among the first to arrive so that I can sit down with you to demystify your camera settings. A basic knowledge of the exposure triangle and a rough understanding of how to take a light reading is going to go a long way here. (Time for these sessions is limited, so register and arrive early to take advantage of this bonus - the first 6 attendees to register for the workshop will be guaranteed an individual slot for these sessions. All others will be held on a first-come, first-served basis individually or in groups by camera type as time allows.)
On the other hand, for some students, coming to grips with their cameras settings over the course of the weekend may be the huge personal milestone they’ve been dreaming of reaching. It’s all good, believe me. My point is this: I want to help you before the weekend really gets going so we can maximize our time shooting photographs and telling stories.
STORYTELLING
We shoot photographs to tell stories so we will spend time addressing this all-important topic.
We'll talk about the how to tell a story in a single image and how to shoot a collection of images that tell a story. We'll focus on shooting photographs during this workshop that tell stories in a personal way…your way. I want you to go home with a set of pictures that was taken by a specific personality—you. That's, after all, what good storytelling is all about; it's the way the story is told and not the story itself.
I want your pictures to say something about how you feel about the world and the people you're with. That attitude is going to result in the very best family photos when you get home.
And we’ll discuss the difficult but necessary task of choosing which images to keep and which to delete. We'll discuss how cropping, editing, and converting to black and white can enhance your photos and the storyline.
Storytelling with a camera is an art and you will not leave the weekend having mastered it, believe me. But your ability to be a visual communicator will grow and flourish.
Essentially, we’re all going to photograph the same buildings, streets, vineyards, people and views but, as all great storytellers know, the story is in the telling. This is a profound lesson to learn as a photographer.
It's not about being self-centered, it’s actually the opposite. It’s about sharing your vision with the world. It’s what we photographers do.
FOLLOW UP WEBINAR PLUS VIDEO RECORDING
A couple of weeks or so after the workshop we'll have a follow-up session via webinar for a final overview of the weekend, review of your photos and editing lessons.
You'll be asked to evaluate and edit your collection of photographs during the week following the workshop and submit a sample of them for my review with the group. We'll discuss content, technique, composition, and storytelling and I'll demonstrate editing techniques in Lightroom.
You'll receive a recording of this session to download for review as needed—and as a keepsake of the group's greatest hits and our shared experiences together during this memorable workshop.

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
Very simply, this workshop is for anyone who wants to become a better photographer. Photographers of all levels are welcome. Probably the most satisfying experience will be had by owners of a DSLR camera, as you want to be able to manually adjust your f-stops, shutter speed and ISO settings. Having said that, if you want to do this workshop with only a smartphone camera, I would welcome that challenge (as long as you wouldn’t mind all the discussion of manual photography) – that could be a wonderful photographic experience for sure. I will try to make the challenge for each participant personal and appropriate to their level and interest.
Due to the challenges presented by a location at a higher altitude (Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet above sea level) and the walking/hiking it may entail, we recommend that attendees have a moderate fitness level and mobility.
WHAT IS THE COVID POLICY?
All participants must be fully vaccinated (including boosters, in accordance with the CDC definition of fully vaccinated at the time of the workshop). We are excited to be back out doing in-person workshops again but the health and safety of our staff and attendees will always be our first priority.
Covid protections and requirements are subject to change depending on the current circumstances at the time of the workshop. Masking and social distancing will be required as deemed necessary by CDC and local government guidelines and recommendations at that time.
Travel Insurance is recommended. (If you’re looking for travel insurance with protections for a wide range of travel emergencies and trip interruptions including those due to Covid-19, check out SquareMouth.)
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENT?
We require a minimum of 6 participants to attend to make it cost effective for us to put on this workshop.
This has been a popular location in the past and we’ve easily exceeded that number so we anticipate reaching this requirement with no problem. However, in the unlikely event that we don’t get 6 participants registered we will cancel the workshop and refund your full registration fee. We will keep all registrants up to date on the participant count until we have 6 confirmed registrants so you will know where the workshop stands at all times.
We recommend that you don’t make any non-refundable travel or housing plans until we have confirmed the workshop is a go. But, given the popularity of this location and the (bucket list!) Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, we expect to be able to do that pretty quickly.
And your workshop fee will be 100% refundable up until 120 days prior to the start of the workshop (June 12, 2023) so you can register now risk-free!
WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COST?
The workshop fee includes:
- Three-day photography workshop with hands-on instruction, assignments, photo review, and editing instruction. (Purchase the Add-On Day Option to turn it into a four-day workshop.)
- Pre-workshop Zoom consultation & photo review with Nick to assess your photography, discuss your goals and get personalized advice on how to prepare for the workshop.

- Nick’s Going Manual Course (self-study version)

WHAT IS THE HOUSING SITUATION AND HOW ARE ROOMS RESERVED?
In Santa Fe, we will be headquartered in a lovely inn or AirBNB rental home just a short stroll from the famed Santa Fe Plaza. Room choices will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices will range from approximately $140 – $325, depending on room selection and single/double occupancy.
For those attendees choosing to include the Add-On Day experience at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, we will be staying at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North. Nightly rates range from $139 to $279 depending on whether you prefer a shared or private room.
Rooms in both locations will be reserved through us. As we will be attending both the morning and evening sessions of the Balloon Fiesta, we will stay at the Marriott both Friday and Saturday nights.
Workshop registrants will receive detailed pricing and reservation information after registering. For double-occupancy rooms, let us know if you have a roommate request – otherwise, we can match you with a roommate or you can seek your own roommate through discussions in our workshop private Facebook group which you’ll get access to soon after registering for the workshop.
CAN I ROOM WITH A FRIEND?
Yes! We’ll appreciate you sharing accommodations with friends or fellow participants, as most rooms will need to be booked on a double occupancy basis. Rooms will be booked first come, first serve, so if you and a friend register for the workshop at the same time, you’ll be able to book a room together. After you register for the workshop, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group for attendees, and you can find a roommate there if you don’t already know one. If you don’t book with someone you know and do not choose a private room, you’ll be assigned a roommate if available … a great way to make new photo-friends!
CAN I BRING A SPOUSE OR OTHER TRAVEL COMPANION?
Yes, absolutely! It’s great to take advantage of such an opportunity to share such a trip.
We realize, though, that many of you will be looking forward to focusing on yourself and your photography during the workshop—and bonding with fellow participants—so we will all, of course, respect that as the goal of our group. However, traveling companions will certainly be welcome to join us for meals and touring activities as space allows.
To bring a guest simply add the appropriate Workshop Guest Package option to your cart at checkout:
3-Day Workshop Guest Package is $395
4-Day Workshop Guest Package is $495
If you’re choosing the Add-On Day to turn your workshop into a 4 day experience be sure to add that to your cart first, the the 3 Day Guest Package option will be switched to the 4 Day Guest Package Option.
Guest Registration Package covers the same meals/admission fees/transportation as workshop attendees—but does not include any participation in photography instruction sessions.
WHAT ABOUT MEALS?
Tuesday’s welcome dinner, daily beakfasts, and a closing meal on Friday are provided. Other meals are at your own expense—feel free to go out on your own, or you’re welcome to join Anne and me in a group.
WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO WIFI?
Yes, there will be high speed WiFi access in the Santa Fe house and the Marriott Albuquerque Hotel.
WHERE DO I FLY INTO AND HOW DO I GET TO THE LOCATION FROM THE AIRPORT?
Your airport options are the Santa Fe Municipal Airport or the Albuquerque International Sunport. If you are participating in the Add-On Option of the Balloon Fiesta, you will want to fly out of Albuquerque at the end of the event. You can find information about ground transportation from Albuquerque to Santa Fe on the airport’s website. You may also be able to share rides with other attendees and organize those arrangements through our private attendee Facebook group.
WHAT ABOUT LOCAL TRANSPORTATION?
You will be responsible for getting yourself to and from the airport to the workshop, but we will arrange for all other local transportation for the group during the workshop.
WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS?
Please let us know if you have any special dietary or mobility needs. IMPORTANT NOTE: Santa Fe is located at a height of 7000 feet, and we will likely be doing some walking along trails. Therefore, we recommend that participants have a moderate fitness level. You can email Anne at info@HowToPhotographYourLife or let us know if you’d like a phone call to discuss how to accommodate any concerns.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Bring your camera and all the lenses you may want to use. If you have a tripod—and it’s not a hassle to bring—bring it. (Many folks in the past have brought their tripods and ended up not using them. It’s your call. It’s NOT mandatory. However, they are helpful for photographing during the evening session of the Balloon Fiesta.) If you own a detachable “speedlight” you can bring that, too. (Although, again, past participants have ended up not using them, so you decide.) And, of course, chargers, portable batteries, a flash drive.
When you pack your equipment for our photo-tours, try to keep yourself light and mobile. Your choice of camera bag is important. There will be some walking involved — and for the most part you’ll be using your camera and whatever lenses you own.
Bring your laptop for post-processing your photos. We will do some editing work onsite during the workshop. I use Lightroom for editing and I’m going to suggest you do, too. If you plan to use Lightroom it would be good to have it installed before you get there. If you need help learning to use it before the workshop, here’s a great course I recommend. 😉

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I PACK?
Comfortable walking shoes are mandatory.
Bring layers to adjust for varying degrees of cold or warm. A raincoat (which we hope you won’t need!) Rain/sun hat. Jacket or coat for nights. You may want to look half way decent for eating in a big city restaurant, but certainly relaxed casual. Average temperatures for that time of year in Santa Fe are mid-60’s-70’s days / 40’s nights—but anything can happen weather-wise these days!
Keep in mind that you could end up in photos taken by me or others throughout the weekend (which I may share in my blog or facebook page), so keep that in mind—seasonal city clothes, avoid t-shirts with logos, etc.
*And for the bonus portrait sessions, remember to bring whatever clothes you want to be photographed in. If you’re wondering what’s best to wear for that, ask yourself what you want these photos for… a nice personal photo for your family or social media? A business headshot for your work? With your camera for your photography page? Just dress accordingly. In terms of colors, black isn’t great, bright white is the worst and solid colors are always the safest way to go.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?
Of course we hope it will be picture-perfect but we have to be prepared that anything can happen weather-wise. (Our itinerary will be flexible to accommodate weather and light and we will shift outdooor/indoor shoots accordingly.) Santa Fe’s weather can change rapidly and often. Average temperatures in Santa Fe in October are highs in the mid-60’s to 70’s, and lows in the 40’s/high 30’s.
A good weather service to check for greatest accuracy is AccuWeather (http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/santa-fe-nm/87501/october-weather/329558)
and your iPhone weather app is the most accurate source of hyperlocal weather information. With down-to-the-minute forecasts, you’ll know exactly when the rain will start or stop, right where you’re standing.
WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?
Your workshop fee will be fully refundable if you cancel your registration up to 120 days prior to the workshop start date (June 12, 2023).
This will allow you to secure your spot now—to take advantage of the early registration discount and special bonus—but be risk-free, with time afterward to be sure you can get travel arrangements in place. [email protected] if you’d like help with arrangements.)
*Please remember we advise not committing to any non-refundable travel or housing expenses until we’ve confirmed that we’ve got our required minimum of 6 participants and the workshop is a go. We will keep all registrants up to date on the registration number.
If you need to cancel within 120 days of the workshop we’ll make every effort to refund your fee (less $100 administrative fee) if we can resell your spot, or you can apply your fee to another workshop within two years.
WHAT IF WE DON'T GET TO SEE THE BALLOONS FLY WHILE WE ARE AT THE BALLOON FIESTA?
Our visit will include both the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday, to give us the best chance to see – and photograph – the inflations, ascensions and glows of the balloons. Please note that we cannot guarantee that balloons will inflate and/or fly during the times we are at the Balloon Fiesta, as inflations and launches are determined by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and are subject to wind and weather conditions and other factors beyond our control. The fireworks show is also subject to the same conditions. While our photography day with Nick will end Saturday evening, you may choose to extend your stay and return to the Balloon Fiesta for additional sessions on subsequent days – however, those accommodations and excursions will be at your own expense, as they are not included as part of the workshop’s Add-On Day.
WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
We’ll be happy to address any questions you may have by phone or email. We can help you determine if this workshop is right for you and offer advice about transportation, rooming and other logistics to help make the trip manageable, affordable and possible for you.
